How to Submit yourself for Representation ....

To have a successful full time career in the entertainment industry, it is common knowledge that you will need good representation.  Representation refers to your agent, your agency or maybe even your management depending on your specific field of the business.  If you've been submitting yourself for representation with limited or no interest/responses then you need to take a look at what and how you are submitting.

You should always include as much appropriate information as possible.  Give the information and pictures that are asked for... most agencies will have specific instructions for what they require right on their website.  If they do not simply give them a call and ask.  If you submit yourself without all the required information then there is a high chance that your submission will be ignored and deleted.  Busy agencies do not have time to play email and/or phone games with you if you forgot to include something they already asked for .... furthermore, it speaks to your (lack of) commitment and work ethic if you cannot take the time to read the submission requirements.

Always meet in person with an agent or agency whenever possible.  Meetings are always more productive than an email submission.  If there is an option to attend an Open Call, you should take advantage of it!

Do NOT include links to your social media sites unless you are specifically asked for them .. they are NOT considered professional.  However if you have a professional, personal website, feel free to include that link in your submission.  Be sure that it is updated frequently and there are no pictures on it which do not currently represent what you look like NOW!

Do always include your contact information.  How else do you expect them to get a hold of you if they are interested.

If a bio is requested, include it,... but do not pour out your life story or anything too personal or negative that you might have experienced.  Trust me, nobody will care and it is not professional.

If you have absolutely nothing to send, just include a natural non professional picture and your measurements.  DO NOT go into detail, about how you've always wanted to be a model/actor and all you need is someone to help you and give you a chance and blah blah blah.  Give them SOMETHING to work with that's concrete, like your measurements, stats and picture. Then you should look into getting a head shots done, at the very least.  (No matter what field you're in) It shows professionalism and most importantly WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE!

What NOT to Wear to Casting Calls...

There are definitely a list of "DON'Ts" as far as wardrobe goes when you're attending a casting call, weather it be for a runway show, commercial print, on camera work etc etc.  You don't want what you're wearing to overpower what you're doing.  This list should help you avoid some of the major no-no's!

1) NO CRAZY PATTERNS ON CLOTHING!
This means stripes, animal print, geometric patterns....
Why? They just don't show up well on camera and they can add volume ...aka make you look fat.  The camera already adds 10 lbs...don't add more!

2) NO BRIGHT SUPER-SKANKY MAKE UP!
You should NOT show up with your makeup looking like you're ready to hit the strip club.
Why? Because when you wear soooo much make up, the casting director can't tell what you actually look like.  If the role calls for crazy make up..let them handle that later.  They need to see the real you!

3) NO EXCESSIVE AND NOISY JEWELRY!
Jewelry that makes noise is an obvious distraction for both on camera castings and other auditions.
Why?  If they can hear you coming before they see you...it's no good. Take it off.  You should never wear jewelry that's visually distracting either, it will only take away from you and whatever it is you're doing...save it for the club later.

4) NO BAGGY CLOTHING!
It will add weight to you on camera and will not show your true shape.  Form fitted clothing is best for most casting situations.
Why? I think this one explains itself

Now..what DO you wear? I'll go into detail about the proper attire, make up and jewelry in my next blog post! Check back soon for updates and look out for the video to accompany this article!

The Importance of Having a Positive Attitude

Everyone knows that a positive outlook on life will get you much further than a negative one.  In the modeling industry, which can be filed with criticism and rejection, it is absolutely crucial to STAY POSITIVE and DO NOT give up on your goals and dreams!

Having a great personality will get you more results than trying to turn yourself into that "perfect" model everyone wants to work with.....I'll save you a lot of time and energy...It's just not going to happen.  You will never please everyone in the industry.  Every agency and every client is looking for something different, which is part of the reason the industry continues to operate.  This is definitely a good thing.  This means that no matter how many times you hear the phrase "You're just not what we're looking for" or simply "NO" that there will be many more opportunities still available.  This is not a cookie cutter industry!! People who think it is are simply making up excuses for their lack of commitment or effort.
Now... back to you.... If you are someone that always walks in the room with your head up, a big smile on your face, and a positive attitude.... you have already greatly increased your odds of booking work or linking with an agency.  People are still just people, no matter if they are at the top of the fashion world or not.  People still like NICE, PLEASANT, FRIENDLY people.  Remember, if you get hired, you will have to spend a good number of hours with the client, and they usually avoid working with miserable people.
Does this sound too simple for you to believe? It's not! There have been several times I've attended casting calls and I was not a fit for what the client wanted, however (instead of getting upset or taking this personally) I maintained a great attitude and chatted with the people in charge of the casting and heard this: "You're not a fit for this project, but I have some other work I think you'll be great for!"
Just give it a try...what's the worst that can happen???
GOOD LUCK AND GET TO WORK!!!
